Scherzer's Return To New York Met With Dissatisfying Tribute

Two days ago Max Scherzer was welcomed back to New York with a tribute video played on the big screen at Citi Field. However Mets fans were less than satisfied.

Scherzer is a solid pitcher. Everyone knows this. But you can’t ignore his age (39), and almost a month ago, the Mets traded Scherzer and $35.5 million in cash to the Texas Rangers in exchange for brother or Ronald Acuña, shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuña.

The former World Series champion and Cy Young winner’s time with the Mets was short lived, only with them for the 2022 season and half of this season. Last year he helped the Mets reach 101 wins.

And it is important to remember that he did not leave the Mets, he was traded. Despite this, he received negative feedback from Mets fans making his return to New York during a three game series with the Rangers.

Scherzer said he enjoyed his time with the Mets, and was not expecting a trade. Their front office thought it would be a healthy PR move to ease the tensions of his departure with a nice video thanking him for his short time with the franchise. However, the fans in attendance at the game met the video with booing and displease.

Mets fans are sick and tired. They are sick of their front office spending big money on aged players like Scherzer. They are so low in the NL east now racing the Nationals just to stay out of dead last.

They are 27 games back in the division. So looking toward the wildcard, it’s not completely out of the question, being only 8.5 back from a spot there. If they are able to go on a run in September, the Mets may still have hope going into the postseason.

Still though, with a $380 million payroll, it is a heartbreaker of a season, with Scherzer’s visit to the big apple being a cherry on top.
