The NFL kicks off tonight in a Thursday Night Football opener as the Detroit Lions take on the defending Super Bowl champs with the Kansas City Chiefs.
If I was a betting man I am actually looking at the Lions to cover tonight. In case you didn’t know, Detroit has covered in 12 straight season openers and their roster made significant improvements during the offseason.
In July they were able to secure Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th pick in this year's draft and he acts as a great addition to their running backs.
In the second round with the 34th pick, the Lions also acquired a new tight end in Sam Laporta, who in his career at Iowa had 1,786 receiving yards.
Amon-Ra St. Brown had a great season last year and I expect the same if not better performance from him this year as their WR1.
As for the Chiefs, everyone knows what to expect. Patrick Mahomes, Isiah Pacheco, and Travis Kelce will lead the offense to a healthy record by the end of the season, that is if Kelce is ruled healthy.
According to NFL Network, Kelce is a “true game-day decision” for tonight, and it will be interesting to see how they adapt in the case of his absence. This is also a large reason I’m going with the Lions.
If you’re interested in the O/U pick, I would lean toward the under. As mentioned Kelce is a big factor in this but the Lions also adjusted their defense adding Moseley, Sutton and Gardener-Johnson in the secondary.
Regardless of it all, I’m excited for football to be back at the pro level, and I’m intrigued at how the Chief's will turn out regarding their star tight end.
